Science Week
21st Nov 2025
We had a really fun Science Week in 5th and 6th Class!
The boys and girls tested Pascal's Theory/Principle which shows how a small push on a small area can create a huge push on a large area. It shows how things like hydraulic lifts and jacks work to lift heavy objects like cars! We had some trial and error with this investigation which is very common in science but it worked!
The students also tested the theory that when an individual’s weight is distributed over several balloons, the balloons do not burst because the pressure is spread over a large area. As a result, each balloon only supports a small fraction of the weight. One group managed to get five students on a table, supported by balloons! The boys and girls were walking on air!
In other science, we continued our learning about the Irish Coast and looked at and responded to an educational video about the intertidal environment and the sealife that lives there. There were some impressive predators, albeit tiny, and we learned about sustainable seaweed harvesting and ethical mass fishing practises around the Irish coast. It was fascinating!
